What is Covid-19? And what support is available?

This page was first published in March 2020, during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. The advice and public information is likely to have changed since the time of writing. However, we have decided to retain this page to document Oxhey Village’s small role in a significant moment of global history.

The following information was provided for information only. While care was taken to extract information from credible sources, we cannot guarantee accuracy and it therefore does not constitute medical advice. You should consult a medical professional and appropriate government agencies if you require assistance.

Covid-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a virus called coronavirus.

Stay at home if you have any of the coronavirus symptoms:

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

To protect others, do not go to places like a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.

Use the 111 coronavirus service to find out what to do. More advice is available on the NHS Covid-19 web page.

Government advice and announcements regarding such things as employment and financial support, school closures, education and childcare, businesses, and travel can be found at www.gov.uk/coronavirus.

Coronavirus testing is now available for everyone over five years of age in Hertfordshire. You find out more about Watford Borough Council’s coronavirus testing.

Community support

OVEG has set up a network of over 100 community volunteers who can help you if you are self-isolating. They can help with picking up shopping, posting mail, picking up urgent supplies, or just a friendly phone call.

If you live in Oxhey Village you should have received a card through your door with the details of the volunteers in your road.

If you’d like to volunteer yourself, please contact Ian Davis.
