War memorial restored ahead of Remembrance Day

If you’ve passed the village green in recent days, you may have noticed some work taking place on the Oxhey Village war memorial.

That’s because we’ve been leading a restoration project, which we’re delighted to have completed just ahead of this year’s Remembrance Sunday.

Thanks to the love and care applied by our specialist contractor, the memorial plaque is back in pristine condition and the details of the fallen servicepeople are now much easier to read.

Restoration was only possible thanks to a sizable grant from Hertfordshire County Council. We’re also grateful to Watford’s mayor Peter Taylor for supporting OVEG’s funding application.

Since its installation in 2014, the war memorial has been an important part of our community; a calm and quiet place to give thoughts to those who bravely gave their lives in service. It is also the starting point of our annual remembrance service and memorial walk.

The memorial plaque was originally part of the former Oxhey Village Baptist Church and removed for safekeeping by local resident Ian Mackay when the Church was demolished. OVEG subsequently fundraised for the new memorial, which was rededicated in September 2014, and we oversee its maintenance on behalf of the community. You can learn more about the history of Oxhey Village Baptist Church and the Oxhey Village War Memorial thanks to an article by Jill Ibbott in our history archives.

We’re only able to carry out these community projects thanks to the support of our members. If you’re not currently an OVEG members, please consider supporting our work by joining today.
