School Holiday Activities

There are lots of free and cheap children’s activities to do in Watford this summer holiday. From Big Events like outdoor cinema and bringing the beach to Watford, to nature and craft activities and plenty of sports sessions…

Big Beach
25 July – 2 August
Can’t make it to the beach? Don’t worry, Watford’s Big Events are bringing it to you! There’s a full timetable events online here.

Free Gym and Swim Sessions for Under 19s
Monday 20 July – Monday 31 August
After you’ve registered for a free Everyone Active Card, Under 19s can get active with free gym and swim sessions. Please contact your local centre for availability. (Watford Central – 01923 296750, Watford Woodside – 01923 892710)

Central Free Swim – Tues & Thurs
Central Free Gym – Mon & Weds 2pm – 4pm
Woodside Free Swim – Mon & Weds
Woodside Free Gym – Mon & Weds 2pm – 4pm

These sessions are available to Watford residents. To attend the free gym sessions you must have attended a gym induction.

Cassiobury Park
Enjoy the park, the playgrounds, and paddling pools as a family, or join in one of the special activities on offer

Making Wildlife Habitats at Cassiobury Park
Create butterfly feeders and other things to help Cassiobury park wildlife, from 11am and noon on Wednesday 29 July 2015. Booking essential with Debbie Brady on 01923 278972 or email: deborah.brady@watford.gov.uk

Woodland Skills in Cassiobury Park
Every Wednesday in August, from 11am to 1pm. Children’s activity (age 10+), learning natural skills in the woods. Free of charge, but booking essential with Debbie Brady on 01923 278972 or email: deborah.brady@watford.gov.uk.

Picnic in Cassiobury Park
8th August
Bring your teddy and come on a bear hunt, make some bear food and stay for a picnic after the event. Families of all ages are welcome but it will be especially fun for younger bears. Follow the bear prints from the Gade Avenue car park and drop in between 11am and 12 noon – no need to book.

Watford Museum – Summertime Fun
6, 13, 19, 26 August 10.30am – 12.30pm
£1 per person. Join us every Thursday in August for some creative, arty sessions at the museum. Learn how to make a puppet, have a go at printing, design a colourful creature and much, much more. Drop in, no booking necessary.

Watford Fire Museum Open Day
8th August from 1pm to 4pm. Try on a fireman’s helmut for size, or perhaps event sit in a fire engine!

Museum Explorer Passport
Look out for your ‘Museum Explorer Passport’ this summer. The passport allows people to visit museums across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex throughout the summer and pick up a stamp for each one they visit. Each museum has different workshops and activities going on, from crafts to trails, so there is something for everyone! There are also special challenges visitors can complete, with a certificate to receive if they complete each task. The passports are available to collect from the Museum.

The Big Screen – 20-23 August
Back by popular demand, this summer’s big screen will be showing a variety of big hits with some classic cinema treats on the side. Pass the popcorn!

Play Rangers
Watford’s Play Rangers will at a park near you throughout the summer. They run football and cricket tournaments as well as bubbles sessions, nurf gun challenges and tug of war competitions. You can find out more at:

Adventure Playgrounds
Watford’s Adventure Playgrounds provide free fun and challenging environments for all children and young people to play and socialise together. They’ll be open all day during the school holidays, from 10am-5pm on weekdays and 11am to 4pm or 5pm at weekends. (Harwoods Adventure Playground is closed on Wednesdays and Harebreaks Adventure Playground is closed on Tuesdays.)
