Woodland Trust plans to demolish Merry Hill bridge

Hartsbourne bridge on Merry Hill, near Oxhey Village, set for demolition

We are concerned to learn that the The Woodland Trust plans to demolish a bridge on Merry Hill, with minimal notice given for the work.

The Hartsbourne Jubilee Bridge was constructed by volunteers in 2002 and was engineered by the late Ian Mackay, who was a former OVEG village liaison office.

This is the first we’ve heard of the plans, and yet it would appear the removal is scheduled for mid-June, with no further reasons given (on a broken sign!). We would like to understand why this work has been ordered and have the chance to explore alternatives, such as repair or replacement, before such drastic, irreversible action takes place.

The Merry Hill/Attenborough Fields routes are an area of beauty and biodiversity, and much loved by many residents. We must not allow access to be restricted without good reason, or at the very least a chance to discuss all of the options.

We have written to our local councillors today to seek their assistance.

How can you help?

Please help us by contacting the Woodland Trust on england@woodlandtrust.org.uk. You could:

  • Outline your disappointment around the lack of communication with the public
  • Suggest the demolition is halted until a consultation has been carried out with residents
  • Request information on reasons for the proposed demolition
  • Seek information on costs to repair or replace the bridge
  • Request that the Woodland Trust meets with the community as soon as possible

In the meantime, you can learn more about the construction of the Hartsbourne Bridge in an article published in the Watford Observer in 2002.
