Attenborough’s Fields

We’ve had an update from the Friends of Attenborough’s Fields regarding recent changes in the fields and the horses that graze there.

On Friday 12th Oct members of the FOAF committee met with Herts CC Rural Estates (the landowner) and Maydencroft who is writing a new management plan for the site.

To summarise, the owners of the horses were given six months notice to remove them as their tenancy expired at the end of September. The decision to remove the horses was due to the continued overgrazing of the fields and the tenants often being uncooperative. All the horses have now been moved to fields the tenants rent elsewhere.

A new management plan for the site is being written which is an exciting opportunity to manage the fields in a much more environmental way which will benefit biodiversity. There may well be future grazing but this is to be decided upon, any future grazing will be more sustainable and no animals will be on site in the winter.

There is currently no threat of development on the fields and we’ll publish more information regarding the new management plan as and when we have it.
