Due to restrictions put in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were not able to hold our traditional Oxhey Village Remembrance Service and Community Walk.
Despite the circumstances, we still wanted to mark this important occasion, so held a discreet, small, and socially distanced service that we could share with everyone via social media and on our website.
The Rev Richard Lowson, minister of Bushey & Oxhey Methodist church, conducted a service on Oxhey Green alongside with Jill Ibbott who laid a wreath in memory of her family. Stephanie Thiers-Ratcliffe, OVEG’s secretary, laid a wreath on behalf of the community.
This was followed by a full service at Watford Heath, where John Ratcliffe recited ‘Remembering’ and laid a wreath on behalf of the armed services. OVEG Chair Paul Hudson laid a wreath for the community.
Ian Brameld played the last post, which resonated more this year, piecing the afternoon due to the emptiness of the normally well attended service.
The restrictions meant that younger members of the community, including the Brownies, Guides, Beavers, and Scouts, were unable to join us. Instead, they held their own services. The Guides laid hand-painted stones along with their wreath.
Earlier in the day, the Women’s Institute and ward councillors laid their wreaths and paid their respects.
We asked the community to consider making a donation to the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, if they felt able. We also encouraged residents to download a poppy and display it in their windows.
