Our campaign: Oxhey Village Memories

Recording the rich history of Oxhey Village, and its people, is one of OVEG’s constitutional aims. In doing so, we can preserve the stories, places and people that shape our community’s identity. We are constantly adding to our historical collections.

Our collection has been built up over more than half a century, capturing important changes over time, and insights into the Oxhey Village we enjoy today.

We have launched our campaign – Oxhey Village Memories – to help expand our collection. We want to hear from anyone who has interesting details to share. There is no time limit on history; we’d like to hear about the 1990s just as much as the 1890s.

On this page you will find suggestions on the ways you can help. This guide is not exhaustive, but it does provide some inspiration as to the items that you may wish to share with us.

Photos, videos and documents

Do you have historical photos, films and documents that tell a story about Oxhey Village’s history? We’d love to see anything that you’re willing to share. You can submit items to history@oveg.org.

Items of particular interest would include:

Documents

• Historical maps
• Minutes of meetings from local organisations
• Records from businesses that have long since ceased trading

Images

• Photos of local landmarks and local people
• Drawings, paintings and artwork that might not have been seen by the public

Videos

• Videos of local events, including OVEG community events

From time to time, families of those who have passed away approach us to donate items – we are always willing to consider storing historical items in our archives.

Personal stories

Oral histories are some of the most powerful tools we have to document memories of life in Oxhey Village. We’re always keen to capture personal reflections; because once they’re gone, they’re gone forever. Perhaps you know an older person whose memories should be recorded for future generations to enjoy?

Some examples of personal memories include:

• Anecdotes from days gone by
• Memories of visits to local shops and pubs
• Details of a local business that you ran or worked in
• Memories of attending, or taking part in, local events
• Reflections on significant national events and how it impacted life in Oxhey Village (e.g. the wars, Covid-10 pandemic, etc.)

History of OVEG

Recording the history of Oxhey Village Environment Group is equally important. Since our founding in 1974, committee members have come and gone, and so have many memories and documents.

We’d be particularly interested in:

• Hearing from former OVEG committee members; some of whom we’ve lost touch with.
• Old OVEG newsletters. We’re currently trying to track those published between 1975 and 1987
• Minutes of OVEG committee meetings and documents related to our work
