War memorial added to national register

The memorial on Oxhey Village Green has been added to the Imperial War Museum’s national register, just in time for this year’s Remembrance Day.

IWM’s register ensures that future generations continue to discover their connection to the people, places and events that local war memorials commemorate.

The record for Oxhey Village Green’s memorial includes photos, details of the local servicepeople who lost their lives in the First World War, as well as a description of the memorial itself. It also details the story of how the memorial was installed by the community and subsequently trusted to the care of OVEG.

Our memorial holds a special place in the community’s heart. Ahead of the demolition of Paddock Road Baptist Church, in 2005, the war memorial plaque was removed from the church’s wall for safekeeping by Ian Mackay. A decade later, that very same plaque was incorporated into a new Oxhey Village Green memorial. A short re-dedication service was conducted on 28 September 2014, after which residents walked together to Watford Heath in a community procession. This began our tradition of an annual Community Remembrance Walk which continues to this day.

The annual Oxhey Village Remembrance Sunday service and memorial walk will take place on Sunday 8 November 2026. We’ll meet at the Oxhey Village Green memorial at 14:15 and begin the walk to the Watford Heath memorial, for a service at 15:00.

The services will be followed by refreshments at Oxhey Bowls Club and the Royal Oak pub on Watford Heath.
