Bushey Museum and Art Gallery is at threat of being evicted and moved to a ‘white box’ on the proposed Bushey Country Club development.
The Friends of Bushey Museum are asking residents to sign a petition, amidst fears that Hertsmere Borough Council will force the museum from its home of more than three decades on Rudolph Road.
Named a ‘Hidden Gem’ by VisitEngland in 2025, Bushey Museum holds the largest collection of public artworks in Hertfordshire, including artworks by 19th century portraitist and polymath, Sir Hubert von Herkomer, and students of his famous Bushey Art School, notably Lucy Kemp-Welch.
Proposals for the Bushey Country Club development will see 286 homes, a supermarket, car park, and what is described as a ‘modern community and cultural hub.’ The Friends of Bushey Museum fear the museum would be rehoused in a small ‘white box’ space without the necessary storage space for its vast collection of art and heritage objects. The relocation would incur considerable costs and result in a significant upheaval.
Nigel, a resident who has already objected to the move, said: “Bushey Museum should stay where it is. The museum has adapted to the building over the years and is in a perfect location. Uprooting the entire collection to a modern insufficient building will undo the work of decades and the community will lose a cultural heritage centre.”
The museum holds many historical records relating to the history of Oxhey Village. It has provided invaluable support to OVEG over the years, including research and images for the production of our book, Oxhey in Pictures.
