We met on Saturday 13 July 2024 for the Golden Anniversary Picnic, to mark the half-centenary of Oxhey Village Environment Group. The event took place on Oxhey Village Green.
The event had some stiff competition from local school fairs and the Wimbledon ladies’ final, and – predictably – the weather wasn’t overly picnic-friendly.
However, we had plenty of entertainment to give people are reason to drop by. DJ Neil kicked off the music as people arrived, followed by a first hour-long set from the exuberant UkeRythmics, a local ukelele band.
Whilst the uke players had a rest, and recuperated with tea and cake, we held a mini photoshoot to mark OVEG’s 50th birthday. We’re brought along photographer Chloé Thompson from MilkChic Creative and invited anyone who has volunteered with us over the past 50 years to join us for a huge group photo on the village green.
Recognising that few of us are unlikely to make it to the 100th anniversary party, it felt like the perfect opportunity to capture a special moment in time, so the Oxhey villagers of 2074 can look back on the faces of our lovely volunteers who have given their time for the community.
After the photo session, the UkeRythmics entertained us for another hour. The keen-eared may have spotted a theme to the backing music playing during the band’s cake break, as all the songs were from 1974; the year OVEG was formed. In payment for the UkeRythmics services, we sent a donation to the charity Brain Tumour Research at the band’s request.
