Remembrance Day Service 2013

The Oxhey Village Remembrance Service took place on the Sunday 10 November 2013.

More than 150 residents attended the service on Watford Heath, which was conducted by Rev. Geoffrey Farrar of Bushey & Oxhey Methodist Church.

We were blessed with sunshine. For the first time, we had a march past by the 4th Bushey Guides, 10th Oxhey Brownies and 29th Oxhey Cubs; with more than 40 children representing the younger community. We were also very lucky to hear resident Ian Brameld play the last post. In Ian’s own words: “It’s a lonely role and lots of pressure to get it note perfect.”

A recital ‘For the fallen’ was provided by Sid Carpenter, a 95 year-old war veteran who, although now living in Hillside Care Home, wanted to fulfil his duty on the day. John Morton laid the wreath on behalf of the Oxhey Village community. Wreaths were also laid by the Guides & Brownies, Cubs, and Beavers.

To complete the event, two active service personnel, Staff Sergeant Eddie Kingsland and Captain Paul Billings, laid wreaths on behalf of service men and women, past and present. Members of the community then came forward with their own wreaths and crosses.

The Royal Oak pub kindly provided refreshments of tea, coffee and juice, free of charge, allowing people to stay and chat with friends and neighbours.

Thanks to the contributions on the day, we raised £218.94 for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
